Kettlebell Overhead Carry

The kettlebell overhead carry is a loaded walking exercise performed while holding a kettlebell locked out above the head. It primarily develops shoulder stability, especially the deltoids, while challenging the core, posture, grip, and lower body. It supports overhead strength, trunk control, and carrying capacity.

Instructions

  1. Choose a manageable kettlebell and stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Clean the kettlebell to the rack position, then press it overhead until the elbow is straight and the bell is steady.
  3. Set the overhead position: keep the wrist neutral, shoulder active, upper arm close to the ear, ribs down, and eyes facing forward.
  4. Brace your core and take short, controlled steps while keeping your torso upright and the kettlebell directly over your shoulder.
  5. Continue for the planned distance or time without leaning, twisting, or allowing the elbow to bend.
  6. Finish under control: stop, lower the kettlebell to the rack position, and place it down safely before changing sides.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the load stacked: aim to keep the kettlebell over the shoulder, hip, and mid-foot rather than letting it drift forward.
  2. Use slow, quiet steps and avoid rushing; loss of balance is a reason to stop and reset.
  3. Do not shrug excessively: keep the shoulder actively stable without forcing it tightly toward the ear.
  4. If you cannot keep a straight elbow and neutral torso, reduce the load, distance, or duration.
