Barbell Bradford Rocky Press

The Barbell Bradford Rocky Press is a standing overhead pressing movement in which the bar travels alternately from the front of the head to behind the neck. It primarily trains the deltoids while also involving the triceps and upper back for pressing and control. It can support shoulder strength, pressing coordination, and overhead barbell control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the bar in a rack around upper-chest height and use a light load. Stand with feet about hip width apart and take a grip just outside shoulder width.
  2. Unrack to the front-rack position. Brace your abdomen, squeeze the glutes, and keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis.
  3. Press the bar upward and slightly back until it clears the head, then lower it under control behind the neck to the upper traps. Do not force the range if shoulder mobility is limited.
  4. Reverse the path by pressing the bar back over the head and lowering it to the front-rack position. Keep the movement smooth, avoid fully locking out between sides, and re-rack safely when finished.

Technique tips

  1. Start very light. The behind-the-neck portion requires comfortable shoulder mobility and controlled bar travel.
  2. Keep the torso tall. Brace the abdomen and squeeze the glutes rather than leaning back to move the bar.
  3. Keep the bar path close and controlled. Avoid bouncing the bar on the traps or lowering it abruptly behind the neck.
