Rolling

Foam rolling is a self-massage technique performed by slowly moving the body over a foam roller. It applies pressure to soft tissues, commonly around the back, glutes, thighs, and calves, to support mobility and post-exercise recovery. It can be used as part of a warm-up or cool-down routine.

Instructions

  1. Choose an area such as the upper back, glutes, thighs, or calves, and place the foam roller on a firm floor.
  2. Set up with control: place the target area on the roller and use your hands and feet to support as much body weight as needed.
  3. Roll slowly over a short section of tissue, keeping your breathing relaxed and your movements controlled.
  4. Pause gently on a tender area if tolerable, then continue or move to another area. Avoid rolling directly over joints, bones, the neck, or the lower back.

Technique tips

  1. Use moderate pressure: support more weight with your hands or feet when the pressure is too intense.
  2. Move slowly: fast rolling usually makes it harder to control pressure and identify sensitive areas.
  3. Stay relaxed: breathe steadily and do not force a painful position or range.
