Back Stretch

A back stretch is a gentle mobility exercise used to lengthen and relax the muscles along the back. It primarily targets the upper and lower back and can help support everyday mobility, posture awareness, and recovery after prolonged sitting or training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start standing tall with your feet about hip-width apart and your knees soft.
  2. Reach both arms forward at shoulder height, gently interlace your fingers or place one hand over the other, and let your upper back round slightly.
  3. Exhale and reach forward as though reaching away from your body. Keep your shoulders relaxed and feel a comfortable stretch through the upper back.
  4. Add a gentle forward bend by hinging at the hips and allowing your head and arms to relax toward the floor; bend the knees as needed for comfort.
  5. Hold comfortably while breathing slowly, then bend your knees, engage your abdomen lightly, and return to standing with control.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the stretch gentle. You should feel mild tension, not sharp, pinching, or radiating pain.
  2. Move with the breath. Exhale as you reach and bend forward; avoid holding your breath or forcing the range.
  3. Do not lock the knees. A soft knee bend can make the position more comfortable and reduce strain during the forward bend.
