Dynamic Back Stretch

Dynamic back stretching uses controlled, repeated movements to mobilize the spine and surrounding back muscles. It primarily targets the back while also encouraging trunk mobility and can be useful as part of a warm-up before training or daily activity.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start standing tall with your feet about hip-width apart, knees soft, and arms relaxed by your sides.
  2. Brace gently by drawing the ribs over the pelvis, then slowly round your upper and middle back as you let your arms reach forward.
  3. Reverse the motion smoothly by opening the chest and drawing the shoulder blades gently back without forcefully arching the lower back.
  4. Continue in a comfortable range for controlled repetitions, moving slowly and breathing steadily throughout.
  5. Stop or reduce the range if you feel sharp pain, numbness, dizziness, or discomfort that increases with movement.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the motion controlled: use a smooth, comfortable rhythm rather than bouncing into end range.
  2. Move through the upper and middle back: avoid creating the movement mainly by aggressively bending the lower back.
  3. Breathe continuously: exhale gently as you round and inhale as you open the chest.
