Seated Spine Stretch Forward

Seated Spine Stretch Forward is a Pilates-based mobility exercise performed seated with the legs extended and spread comfortably apart. It uses controlled spinal flexion to stretch the back of the body, especially the back and hamstrings, while encouraging postural awareness and spinal mobility. It can support flexibility and controlled movement quality.

Instructions

  1. Sit tall on the floor with your legs extended in front of you and comfortably wider than hip-width apart.
  2. Reach both arms forward at shoulder height, keeping your shoulders relaxed and your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  3. Exhale and slowly round forward through your spine, reaching your hands forward without forcing the range.
  4. Pause briefly in a comfortable stretch, keeping your hips grounded and your neck relaxed.
  5. Inhale as you slowly stack your spine back up to a tall seated position.

Technique tips

  1. Move gradually and let the spine round naturally rather than pulling yourself forward with your arms.
  2. Keep both sitting bones grounded; bend your knees slightly if tight hamstrings pull your pelvis backward.
  3. Use a smooth exhale to deepen the motion gently, not by forcing the stretch.
  4. Stop short of pain or pinching in the back, hips, or hamstrings.
