Roll Down

The Pilates Roll Down is a controlled spinal-articulation exercise performed from a tall seated position. It emphasizes abdominal control, spinal mobility, and postural awareness while the back muscles assist the movement. It can support core endurance, flexibility, and controlled movement quality.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit tall with your legs extended in front of you, feet about hip-width apart, and arms reaching forward at shoulder height.
  2. Prepare: Lengthen through the crown of your head, gently engage your abdominals, and keep your shoulders relaxed away from your ears.
  3. Roll down: Exhale and tuck your chin slightly, then round through the upper, middle, and lower back in sequence as you reach forward.
  4. Return with control: Inhale at your comfortable end range, then exhale and stack the spine back to tall sitting one vertebra at a time. Keep the movement smooth and stop before straining the back or hamstrings.

Technique tips

  1. Move from the abdominals: Think of drawing the belly gently inward to initiate and control the roll rather than pulling with the arms.
  2. Keep it comfortable: Bend the knees slightly or sit on a folded mat if tight hamstrings make it difficult to sit tall.
  3. Avoid momentum: Use a slow, even pace; do not drop backward or force a deeper spinal curve.
