Bench Decline Crunch

The decline bench crunch is a bodyweight abdominal exercise performed on a bench set at a downward angle. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis, especially through controlled spinal flexion, while the decline increases the challenge compared with a floor crunch. It supports core strength and abdominal muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the bench to a manageable decline and secure your feet under the foot pads.
  2. Lie back with your knees bent, keep your lower back lightly in contact with the bench, and place your hands lightly at your temples or cross them over your chest.
  3. Exhale and curl up by contracting your abdominals, lifting your head and shoulder blades from the bench. Keep your chin slightly tucked and your elbows relaxed.
  4. Pause briefly when your upper back is off the bench; avoid sitting all the way up or pulling on your neck.
  5. Inhale and lower slowly until your shoulder blades return to the bench, then repeat with control. Stop if the bench setup feels unstable or causes pain.

Technique tips

  1. Use a modest decline first. A steeper angle substantially increases the resistance and can make form harder to control.
  2. Move from the ribs, not the neck. Keep space between your chin and chest and use your hands only for light support.
  3. Keep the range deliberate. Lift only until the shoulder blades clear the bench, then lower slowly without bouncing.
