Decline Bench Abdominal Reach

The decline bench abdominal reach is a bodyweight abdominal exercise performed on a decline bench, combining trunk flexion with a controlled forward reach of the arms. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis while the obliques help stabilize the torso. It can support core strength and control through a challenging inclined range of motion.

Instructions

  1. Set the bench to a comfortable decline and secure your feet under the pads. Lie face up with your knees bent and your arms extended above your chest.
  2. Brace your abdomen by gently drawing your ribs down and keeping your lower back controlled against the bench.
  3. Exhale and curl up through your upper back, lifting your shoulder blades from the bench without pulling on your neck.
  4. Reach forward with straight but relaxed arms toward your feet as you reach the top position; keep the movement controlled rather than jerking upward.
  5. Inhale and lower slowly until your shoulder blades return to the bench. Maintain abdominal tension and repeat.
  6. Use a manageable bench angle and stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, or neck discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Move from the ribs rather than trying to sit fully upright; the goal is a controlled abdominal curl and reach.
  2. Keep your chin neutral and leave space between your chin and chest to avoid leading with the neck.
  3. Control the descent for the full range instead of dropping back onto the bench.
  4. Reduce the decline angle if you cannot keep the movement smooth or your lower back loses control.
