Skin the Cat

Skin the Cat is a calisthenics movement performed from a hang on a pull-up bar, rotating the body backward through an inverted position and into a controlled shoulder extension. It develops shoulder mobility and stability, grip strength, core control, and upper-back engagement. It supports gymnastics-style body control and overhead shoulder mobility.

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Use a stable pull-up bar with enough clear space around and beneath it. Take an overhand grip about shoulder width apart and hang with straight arms.
  2. Lift into inversion: Brace your core, bend your knees toward your chest, and smoothly roll your hips upward until you are upside down. Keep the movement controlled rather than swinging.
  3. Rotate through: Continue drawing your legs backward between your arms as your hips travel behind the bar. Keep a firm grip and allow the shoulders to open gradually.
  4. Reach the bottom position: Lower only as far as you can maintain a comfortable, controlled shoulder extension and an active grip. Pause briefly without forcing the range.
  5. Return with control: Reverse the movement by engaging your core and upper back, bringing the legs back through to the inverted position, then lower to a dead hang. Step down safely when finished.

Technique tips

  1. Build the range gradually: Keep the shoulder extension shallow at first and increase depth only when it is smooth and comfortable.
  2. Avoid momentum: Swinging can make the transition less controlled; move slowly and keep your core braced.
  3. Maintain an active grip: Keep both hands firmly closed around the bar throughout every repetition.
  4. Stop for pain: End the repetition if you feel sharp pain, numbness, or loss of shoulder control.
