Cable Rope Row to Neck

The cable rope row to neck is a standing cable pulling exercise in which a rope attachment is drawn upward toward the neck. It primarily trains the shoulders and upper back, with assistance from the arms and forearms. It can support shoulder strength, upper-back development, and controlled pulling mechanics.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley to its lowest position and attach a rope handle. Choose a light load that allows smooth control.
  2. Stand facing the cable with feet about hip-width apart, arms extended, and one end of the rope in each hand.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest tall, and maintain a neutral spine without leaning back.
  4. Pull the rope upward toward neck height, leading with the elbows and keeping them comfortably below or around shoulder height.
  5. Pause briefly near the neck while keeping the shoulders down and avoiding a shrug.
  6. Return the rope slowly to straight arms without letting the weight stack slam, then repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Use a modest load: excessive weight often causes leaning, swinging, or shoulder shrugging.
  2. Keep the path comfortable: do not force the elbows unusually high or continue through shoulder pinching.
  3. Control both phases: pull smoothly and use a slow return rather than letting the cable pull you forward.
  4. Breathe steadily: exhale as you pull and inhale as you return.
