Kettlebell Alternating Shoulder Press

The kettlebell alternating shoulder press is a standing overhead press performed one arm at a time, alternating sides. It primarily develops the shoulders and triceps while requiring core control to keep the torso stable. It supports upper-body pressing strength, shoulder stability, and unilateral coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart. Clean two kettlebells into the rack position, with the handles resting diagonally in the palms and elbows close to the ribs.
  2. Brace: Tighten your abdomen and glutes, keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis, and maintain neutral wrists. Keep one kettlebell securely racked while pressing the other.
  3. Press: Exhale and press one kettlebell upward in a smooth path until the arm is straight overhead. Finish with the biceps near the ear without shrugging excessively or leaning backward.
  4. Lower and alternate: Inhale as you lower the kettlebell under control to the rack position, then press the other side. Alternate sides for the planned repetitions while keeping your feet planted and torso steady.

Technique tips

  1. Choose manageable bells: Use a load that lets you keep the wrist stacked over the forearm and the torso upright on both sides.
  2. Avoid leaning: Do not turn the press into a backbend. Squeeze the glutes and keep the ribs down as the bell travels overhead.
  3. Control the rack: Lower each kettlebell quietly and deliberately; do not let it crash onto the forearm or shoulder.
