Balance Board Stand

The balance board stand is a static balance exercise performed while standing on an unstable board. It primarily challenges core bracing and the stabilizing muscles of the legs and ankles while improving balance, coordination, and body awareness. It can support general stability and lower-body control.

Instructions

  1. Set up safely: Place the balance board on a flat, clear, non-slip surface near a stable support if needed.
  2. Step on carefully: Place one foot near the center, then bring the other foot onto the board at about hip width.
  3. Find balance: Soften your knees, keep your feet planted, and level the board as much as possible.
  4. Hold alignment: Stand tall with your ribs stacked over your pelvis, lightly brace your abdomen, and look straight ahead.
  5. Maintain the hold: Use small ankle and hip adjustments to control the board; breathe steadily without holding your breath.
  6. Step off with control: Step down one foot at a time when the set ends. Stop if you cannot regain control safely.

Technique tips

  1. Start supported: Keep a wall, rail, or sturdy object within reach until you can mount and dismount confidently.
  2. Use small corrections: Avoid large, fast movements; quiet ankle and hip adjustments are more effective.
  3. Keep knees soft: Locked knees reduce your ability to absorb board movement and adjust balance.
  4. Progress gradually: First increase hold time before attempting a more unstable board or less hand support.
