Cable Rope Crunch

The cable rope crunch is a kneeling abdominal exercise performed using a high cable pulley and rope attachment. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis through controlled spinal flexion, while the obliques help stabilize the torso. It supports abdominal strength and hypertrophy when performed with a manageable load and strict form.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a rope attachment on a high cable pulley and choose a light-to-moderate load.
  2. Face the machine, grasp both rope ends, and kneel a short distance from the stack with the rope beside your temples.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your hips mostly still, and begin with a tall kneeling torso and a neutral neck.
  4. Exhale and curl your rib cage toward your pelvis, allowing your upper back to round without pulling the rope down with your arms.
  5. Pause briefly in the shortened position, then inhale and return slowly until your torso is tall again; keep tension controlled throughout each repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Move through your spine, not your hips. Excessive hip hinging shifts work away from the abdominals.
  2. Keep your hands near your head only to hold the rope; do not turn the exercise into a triceps pull-down.
  3. Use a load that permits a slow return and a full, pain-free range of motion.
  4. Exhale during the curl and avoid sharply jerking or bouncing the weight stack.
