Stability Ball Medicine Ball Sit-Up

The Stability Ball Medicine Ball Sit-Up is a weighted abdominal exercise performed with the lower back supported on a stability ball. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis and also involves the hip flexors while the ball adds balance and trunk-control demands. It can support core strength and controlled trunk flexion.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Sit in front of a stability ball, then lean back until your lower back is supported near the middle of the ball. Plant your feet flat on the floor about hip-width apart.
  2. Hold the medicine ball: Hold a light medicine ball securely against your chest with both hands. Keep your head, neck, and spine in a neutral starting position.
  3. Brace: Tighten your abdominal muscles and keep your feet firmly planted so the ball does not roll.
  4. Sit up: Exhale as you curl your torso upward, lifting your shoulder blades away from the ball. Keep the medicine ball close to your chest and avoid pulling with your neck.
  5. Return with control: Inhale and slowly lower your torso back over the ball until you reach a comfortable stretch without losing balance. Repeat smoothly.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Begin with a light medicine ball; the stability ball makes the exercise more demanding than a floor sit-up.
  2. Keep the ball stable: Maintain steady foot pressure and move slowly, especially during the lowering phase.
  3. Control the range: Stop the descent before your lower back feels strained or you cannot maintain balance.
