Dumbbell Suitcase Carry

The dumbbell suitcase carry is a loaded walking exercise performed while holding one dumbbell at your side. It primarily challenges the obliques and trunk control as you resist leaning toward the weight, while also training grip and upper-back support. It supports core stability, carrying capacity, and practical full-body strength.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell on the floor beside one foot.
  2. Hinge slightly, grasp the dumbbell firmly, and stand up with your shoulders level.
  3. Brace your abdomen and let the dumbbell hang at your side with a straight arm.
  4. Walk forward with controlled, even steps while keeping your torso upright and avoiding a lean toward the weight.
  5. Stop, set the dumbbell down with control, and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a load that allows you to keep both shoulders level throughout the carry.
  2. Keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis rather than arching your lower back.
  3. Take short, deliberate steps instead of rushing or swaying side to side.
  4. Use a clear walking path and keep the dumbbell close to your body when setting it down.
