Dumbbell Press Stability Ball

The Stability Ball Dumbbell Press is a chest press performed while the upper back is supported on a stability ball. It trains the chest, triceps, and shoulders while demanding added core and hip stability. It can support upper-body pressing strength, muscular development, and balance control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Hold a dumbbell in each hand, sit on the stability ball, and walk your feet forward until the ball supports your upper back and shoulders.
  2. Find a stable bridge: Place your feet about hip-width apart, bend the knees, and lift the hips so the torso is roughly parallel to the floor. Brace the abdomen and keep the head neutral.
  3. Start the press: Hold the dumbbells beside the chest with wrists stacked over elbows and elbows angled slightly below shoulder height.
  4. Press smoothly: Exhale as you press the dumbbells upward until the arms are nearly straight, keeping the weights controlled and the ball from rolling.
  5. Lower with control: Inhale and lower the dumbbells toward the sides of the chest without letting the elbows drop excessively or the hips sag. Complete all repetitions, then sit up carefully before setting down the weights.

Technique tips

  1. Start light: Use a load you can control while keeping the ball still; stability should not be sacrificed for heavier dumbbells.
  2. Keep hips level: Maintain a straight line from shoulders through hips to knees rather than arching the lower back or letting the hips drop.
  3. Use a comfortable range: Lower only as far as you can keep the shoulders controlled and the wrists aligned over the elbows.
