Kettlebell Alternating Row

The kettlebell alternating row is a bent-over pulling exercise in which you row one kettlebell at a time while holding a stable hip-hinged position. It primarily trains the lats and upper back, with meaningful work from the biceps, rear shoulders, core, and hips. It supports back strength, pulling control, and trunk stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Place two kettlebells on the floor just outside your feet. Stand with feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Hinge: Push your hips back and bend your knees slightly until you can grip both handles. Keep your spine neutral, chest long, and neck aligned with your back.
  3. Row one side: Brace your abdomen and pull one kettlebell toward the side of your rib cage, driving the elbow back without twisting your torso.
  4. Lower with control: Return that kettlebell to the hanging position under control while maintaining the hip hinge.
  5. Alternate: Row the other kettlebell in the same manner. Continue alternating sides for the desired repetitions.
  6. Finish safely: Keep both bells close to the floor and stand by driving through your feet and extending your hips. Stop if you cannot maintain a neutral back.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the torso square: Avoid rotating toward the working arm; let the shoulder blade and elbow create the pull.
  2. Use a manageable load: Choose kettlebells that allow a steady hip hinge and controlled lowering on every repetition.
  3. Breathe deliberately: Brace before each row and exhale as you pull, without holding your breath for prolonged periods.
  4. Do not shrug: Keep the shoulders away from the ears and pull the elbow toward the hip rather than straight upward.
