Macebell Switch Press

The Macebell Switch Press is a standing overhead press in which the macebell is transferred between hands in a controlled switch before the next press. It primarily trains the shoulders and triceps while challenging grip, upper-back control, coordination, and core bracing. It supports overhead strength, unilateral control, and movement coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart. Hold the macebell close to your body with one hand near the lower end of the handle, keeping the bell controlled and the wrist neutral.
  2. Press: Brace your abdomen and glutes, then press the macebell overhead until the working arm is straight. Keep your ribs down and avoid leaning back or shrugging toward the ear.
  3. Lower and switch: Bring the macebell back down under control to a secure position in front of the chest. Keep it close to the body and transfer the handle smoothly to the other hand without tossing it.
  4. Repeat: Establish your balance, then press with the new working arm. Alternate sides for the planned repetitions, using a light macebell until every switch is stable and controlled.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize control: The hand switch should be quiet and close to your torso; never throw or chase the macebell.
  2. Use an appropriate load: The offset weight creates leverage, so begin lighter than you would for a conventional dumbbell press.
  3. Keep a stacked position: At the top, align the wrist, elbow, shoulder, and macebell over a stable torso rather than arching the lower back.
