Machine Assisted Pull-Up

The machine assisted pull-up uses a counterweight platform or knee pad to reduce the amount of body weight lifted. It primarily trains the latissimus dorsi and upper back, with meaningful assistance from the biceps and forearms. It helps build pulling strength and control for unassisted pull-ups.

Instructions

  1. Set the assistance: Select a counterweight that allows controlled repetitions; more assistance makes the movement easier.
  2. Set up: Step onto the platform or place both knees on the pad, then grasp the handles with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder width.
  3. Start tall: Hang with straight arms, lift your chest slightly, brace your abdomen, and pull your shoulders down away from your ears.
  4. Pull up: Drive your elbows down toward your sides and raise your chest toward the bar without swinging or kicking.
  5. Lower with control: Descend smoothly until your arms are straight and shoulders remain controlled, then repeat. Step off only after the platform or pad is fully stable.

Technique tips

  1. Use full control: Avoid bouncing off the bottom or dropping quickly into the stretched position.
  2. Choose the right assistance: Use enough counterweight to maintain a smooth range of motion without swinging.
  3. Keep the neck neutral: Do not crane the chin toward the bar; lead with the chest instead.
  4. Progress gradually: Reduce the assistance in small steps only when all repetitions remain controlled.
