Back Hyperextension

The back hyperextension is a bodyweight hip-extension exercise performed on a back-extension bench. It primarily trains the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings while building posterior-chain strength and control. It can support better hip-hinge mechanics and general trunk endurance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the bench: Position the hip pad just below your hip creases and secure your feet under the foot pads.
  2. Start aligned: Cross your arms over your chest, brace your abdomen, and keep your neck neutral with your body in a straight line.
  3. Lower with control: Hinge at the hips and lower your torso until you feel a comfortable stretch through the hamstrings while keeping the spine neutral.
  4. Rise through the hips: Squeeze your glutes and extend your hips to raise your torso back to a straight, aligned position.
  5. Finish without overextending: Stop when your body is straight; do not force the lower back into a high arch. Repeat smoothly.

Technique tips

  1. Hinge, do not fold: Let the hips move over the pad rather than rounding and straightening the lower back.
  2. Keep the range comfortable: Lower only as far as you can maintain a neutral spine and rise only to body alignment.
  3. Use steady tempo: Avoid swinging or bouncing; control both the lowering and lifting phases.
  4. Start with bodyweight: Build consistent form before considering any added resistance.
