Barbell Seated Good Morning

The barbell seated good morning is a seated hip-hinge exercise performed with a barbell across the upper back. It primarily strengthens the lower back while training the hamstrings and glutes to control hip flexion and extension. It can support posterior-chain strength, bracing control, and hinge mechanics.

Instructions

  1. Set a stable bench: Sit near the front edge with your feet flat, set about shoulder-width apart, and toes pointing forward or slightly outward.
  2. Place the bar: Position a light barbell securely across your upper back, not on your neck, and hold it evenly with both hands.
  3. Brace: Keep your chest tall, tighten your trunk, and maintain a neutral spine before beginning the repetition.
  4. Hinge forward: Push your hips back and lean your torso forward in a controlled motion while keeping your back neutral and your feet planted.
  5. Return upright: Drive through your hips to raise your torso until upright, then repeat without jerking or overextending your lower back.

Technique tips

  1. Start very light: The seated position limits hip movement and can make spinal loading feel demanding.
  2. Keep the bar off your neck: Rest it on the upper back and maintain an even, secure grip.
  3. Use a pain-free range: Stop the descent before your lower back rounds or you lose trunk tension.
  4. Control breathing: Brace before lowering, then exhale gradually as you return upright.
