Assisted Hyperextension

Assisted hyperextension is a supported hip-extension exercise performed on an assisted hyperextension machine. It primarily trains the lower back while also engaging the glutes and hamstrings to control trunk movement. It can help build posterior-chain strength and improve controlled hip-hinge mechanics.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine so the hip pad supports the front of your pelvis and the foot supports feel secure. Select a light assistance setting.
  2. Place your feet firmly on the supports, brace your abdomen, and keep your spine neutral with your gaze directed slightly downward.
  3. Cross your arms over your chest or use the handles, then hinge at the hips to lower your torso under control without rounding your back.
  4. Press through the feet and contract your glutes to raise your torso until it is in line with your lower body.
  5. Pause briefly at the top without leaning backward or forcefully arching the lower back, then lower smoothly for the next repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Move from the hips, not by repeatedly bending and straightening the lumbar spine.
  2. Use only enough assistance to keep the motion smooth and controlled; reduce assistance gradually as strength improves.
  3. Exhale as you raise the torso and inhale as you lower it, keeping the abdominal brace throughout.
  4. Stop the upward phase at a neutral, straight-body position rather than hyperextending the back.
