Machine Back Extension

Machine back extensions are a resistance exercise in which you extend the torso against a machine's padded resistance. They primarily train the lower back, with assistance from the glutes and hamstrings. The exercise supports posterior-chain strength, trunk control, and general lifting capacity.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine so the pivot and pads allow a comfortable torso movement; select a light starting load.
  2. Position yourself as instructed by the machine, securing your feet and placing your pelvis or thighs firmly against the support pads.
  3. Set the resistance pad against your upper back, brace your abdomen, and keep your neck neutral.
  4. Begin with your torso slightly flexed only as far as is comfortable, without rounding forcefully through the low back.
  5. Extend your torso in a smooth, controlled motion until your body is aligned and your spine is neutral; do not lean excessively backward.
  6. Pause briefly, then return slowly to the starting position under control. Keep the movement pain-free and stop if you feel sharp discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Use a neutral finish: stop when your torso is aligned rather than hyperextending your lower back.
  2. Keep your abdominal brace throughout the repetition so the motion remains controlled.
  3. Choose a load that lets you lower slowly; avoid using momentum or bouncing off the pads.
  4. Exhale as you extend and inhale as you return, while keeping your neck in line with your spine.
