Band Lateral Raise

The band lateral raise is a shoulder isolation exercise performed by lifting the arms out to the sides against resistance-band tension. It primarily targets the lateral deltoids, with the upper back and trapezius assisting to stabilize the shoulders. It supports shoulder strength, muscle development, and control.

Instructions

  1. Set up the band: Stand on the center of a resistance band with feet about hip-width apart, holding one end in each hand with palms facing inward.
  2. Find your starting position: Stand tall with a soft bend in the knees, arms by your sides, chest lifted, and ribs stacked over the pelvis.
  3. Raise the arms: Keeping a slight bend in the elbows, lift both arms out to the sides in a controlled arc until they reach about shoulder height.
  4. Keep the shoulders controlled: Lead with the elbows, keep the wrists neutral, and avoid shrugging the shoulders toward the ears.
  5. Lower slowly: Return the hands to your sides under control while maintaining tension in the band, then repeat.
  6. Use suitable resistance: Choose a band that allows smooth repetitions without leaning back, swinging, or losing shoulder position.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the load light: The lateral deltoids respond well to controlled repetitions; do not sacrifice form for a stronger band.
  2. Limit the height: Raise to about shoulder height unless you can do more without shoulder discomfort or shrugging.
  3. Avoid momentum: Keep the torso still and make the lowering phase slow and deliberate.
  4. Breathe steadily: Exhale as you raise the arms and inhale as you lower them.
