Dumbbell Lateral Raise Side-Lying

The side-lying dumbbell lateral raise is a single-arm shoulder isolation exercise performed while lying on one side. It primarily targets the lateral deltoid while minimizing momentum and helping develop shoulder strength and muscle definition. It supports controlled shoulder training with light to moderate loads.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Choose a light dumbbell and lie on one side on a stable, flat surface. Keep your legs comfortably bent or stacked, and hold the dumbbell in the upper hand with the arm alongside your body.
  2. Align the shoulder: Keep the working arm nearly straight with a soft elbow and use a neutral or slightly palm-forward grip. Brace your trunk and keep the working shoulder away from your ear.
  3. Raise: Exhale and lift the dumbbell out to the side in a smooth arc until the upper arm is roughly in line with the shoulder, or within a pain-free range.
  4. Lower with control: Inhale as you slowly return the dumbbell to the starting position without relaxing control. Complete the repetitions, then turn over and perform the same number on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load: The side-lying position makes small weights challenging; prioritize smooth control over load.
  2. Avoid shrugging: Keep your neck relaxed and shoulder blade stable rather than lifting the shoulder toward the ear.
  3. Keep the range comfortable: Do not force the arm higher if shoulder discomfort or loss of control occurs.
