Dumbbell Lateral Raise

The dumbbell lateral raise is an isolation exercise in which you lift dumbbells out to the sides with mostly straight arms. It primarily targets the lateral deltoids, helping build shoulder width, strength, and control. The upper trapezius and core assist with stable posture throughout the movement.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with a neutral grip. Keep a soft bend in the knees and brace your abdomen.
  2. Set your shoulders: Keep your chest comfortably tall, neck long, and shoulders down rather than shrugged. Bend your elbows slightly and maintain that bend throughout the repetition.
  3. Raise: Exhale and lift both dumbbells out to the sides in a controlled arc. Lead with the elbows and keep the weights slightly in front of your torso rather than directly behind it.
  4. Reach shoulder height: Stop when your upper arms are approximately parallel to the floor, or earlier if you cannot maintain comfortable shoulder control. Keep your wrists neutral and avoid swinging your body.
  5. Lower: Inhale and lower the dumbbells slowly along the same arc until they return to your sides. Pause briefly, reset your posture, and repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light, controllable load: Heavy dumbbells often turn this into a swinging movement and shift work away from the lateral deltoids.
  2. Lead with the elbows: Think of moving the elbows outward and upward while keeping the hands slightly below elbow level.
  3. Do not shrug: Keep space between your shoulders and ears to limit excessive upper-trapezius dominance.
  4. Control the lowering phase: Lowering slowly improves control and avoids dropping the weights into the bottom position.
