Bar Muscle-Up

The bar muscle-up is a calisthenics movement that combines a powerful pull-up with a transition over a horizontal bar and a straight-bar dip. It primarily trains the lats while also challenging the chest, triceps, shoulders, and upper-body pulling strength. It supports the development of explosive pulling power, upper-body coordination, and bar-control skills.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Use a stable horizontal pull-up bar with enough clearance above and in front of it.
  2. Hang from the bar with an overhand grip, hands slightly wider than shoulder width, and engage your shoulders and trunk.
  3. Pull forcefully upward, keeping the bar close as your chest rises toward it.
  4. Lean your chest over the bar by bringing your elbows around and above it, then establish a supported position.
  5. Press through your hands until your elbows are straight, then lower with control to the hang before the next repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Build sufficient pull-up and straight-bar dip strength before attempting full repetitions.
  2. Keep the bar close to your body during the pull to make the transition more efficient.
  3. Avoid letting your shoulders shrug forward sharply during the transition.
  4. Use a secure bar and stop the set if grip or control deteriorates.
