Barbell Forward Lunge

The barbell forward lunge is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed by stepping forward and lowering into a lunge while supporting a barbell across the upper back. It primarily trains the quadriceps and also works the glutes and hamstrings while developing single-leg strength, balance, and lower-body control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a barbell securely across your upper back, stand tall, and brace your torso.
  2. Take a controlled step forward with one foot, keeping both feet facing forward.
  3. Lower your hips until both knees are bent comfortably, keeping your torso upright and front knee aligned with the foot.
  4. Push through the front foot to step back to the starting position.
  5. Repeat on the other side or complete the desired repetitions on one side before switching.

Technique tips

  1. Start with a light load until you can control the step, descent, and return without losing balance.
  2. Use a step length that lets your front heel stay planted and your front knee track in line with your toes.
  3. Keep your torso braced and avoid leaning excessively forward or side to side.
  4. Lower under control rather than dropping quickly into the bottom position.
