Stability Ball Back Extension

The stability ball back extension is a bodyweight hip and spinal extension exercise performed face-down over a stability ball. It primarily trains the lower back while also engaging the glutes and hamstrings to support posture, trunk control, and posterior-chain strength.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Place a stability ball on a non-slip surface and lie face-down over it, with the ball supporting your hips and lower abdomen.
  2. Secure your stance: Place your feet apart with the toes or soles braced against a wall, or keep them firmly on the floor. Cross your arms over your chest or place your hands lightly beside your head.
  3. Find a neutral start: Brace your abdominal muscles and let your torso lower toward the ball with your neck in line with your spine.
  4. Extend with control: Squeeze your glutes and raise your torso until your body forms a straight line from head through hips. Keep the movement smooth and avoid forcing your lower back into an exaggerated arch.
  5. Lower and repeat: Slowly return to the starting position while maintaining control. Stop the set if you cannot keep the ball stable or feel sharp discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize stability: Brace your feet securely and use a ball size that lets you control the movement without rolling.
  2. Move from the hips: Think about squeezing the glutes to lift rather than simply bending and arching through the lower back.
  3. Keep the range comfortable: Finish when your torso aligns with your hips; higher is not better if it causes lumbar compression or loss of control.
