Dumbbell Cobra Stability Ball

The Dumbbell Cobra on Stability Ball is a prone back-extension exercise performed while balanced over a stability ball with light dumbbells. It primarily trains the lower back and upper back, while also engaging the rear shoulders and glutes. It supports postural strength, back endurance, and control of spinal extension.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Choose light dumbbells and place a stability ball on a non-slip surface.
  2. Lie face down over the ball with your feet wide for balance, knees soft, and dumbbells hanging beneath your shoulders with palms facing in.
  3. Brace your abdomen, squeeze your glutes, and keep your neck long by looking toward the floor.
  4. Exhale as you lift your chest slightly and draw the dumbbells back alongside your body, squeezing your shoulder blades without shrugging.
  5. Pause briefly, then lower with control until your arms hang and your torso returns to a neutral position. Do not force a large lower-back arch.

Technique tips

  1. Use very light resistance. The goal is controlled back and shoulder-blade movement, not heavy loading.
  2. Keep the ribs down. Lift only as far as you can without pinching or overextending the lower back.
  3. Stabilize first. Widen your foot position or reduce the range of motion if the ball moves excessively.
