Cable Incline Press

The cable incline press is a chest pressing exercise performed on an incline bench between adjustable cable pulleys. It primarily targets the upper chest while the shoulders and triceps assist the pressing motion. The cables provide continuous resistance and can support chest strength and muscle-building goals.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Place an incline bench centrally between two cable pulleys and set the backrest to a moderate incline. Set both pulleys around the lower-chest height when seated, then attach single handles.
  2. Select a light load, sit on the bench, and take one handle in each hand. Bring the handles to the sides of your upper chest with your feet planted firmly on the floor.
  3. Set your position: keep your head, upper back, and hips supported by the bench; brace your abdomen; and draw your shoulder blades gently back and down.
  4. Press the handles upward and slightly inward until your arms are nearly straight. Keep your wrists neutral and avoid forcefully locking the elbows.
  5. Lower with control until your elbows are slightly below or level with your torso, using only a comfortable shoulder range of motion.
  6. Repeat smoothly, exhaling during the press and inhaling as you return. Finish the set under control and return the handles carefully rather than letting the stack pull your arms back.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: cable resistance can pull the shoulders backward strongly at the bottom, so begin lighter than you would with a barbell or dumbbells.
  2. Keep the bench angle moderate; an excessively steep angle shifts more work to the front shoulders and away from the upper chest.
  3. Keep your elbows slightly below shoulder height and use a pain-free range. Do not force a deep stretch at the bottom.
  4. Control both directions: press smoothly without bouncing, then resist the cables on the return rather than allowing the weight stack to drop.
