Cable Rope Face Pull

The cable rope face pull is an upper-body pulling exercise performed by drawing a rope attachment toward the face. It primarily trains the rear deltoids and upper back, while the rotator cuff helps control the movement. It supports shoulder strength, posture, and balanced upper-body training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley to about forehead height and attach a rope handle. Select a light load that allows controlled movement.
  2. Stand facing the cable with feet about hip-width apart, knees soft, chest tall, and arms extended while holding the rope ends with a neutral grip.
  3. Brace your trunk and pull the rope toward your face by driving the elbows out and back. Let the rope separate so your hands finish near the sides of your face.
  4. Finish with the upper arms roughly level with the shoulders, shoulder blades drawn back, and without shrugging.
  5. Pause briefly, then slowly extend the arms to return to the start without letting the weight stack slam.
  6. Repeat for controlled repetitions, keeping the head neutral and the torso still.

Technique tips

  1. Use a modest load: momentum and excessive weight can shift work away from the rear shoulders and upper back.
  2. Lead with the elbows: keep them high and moving outward rather than pulling the hands straight down.
  3. Control both directions: pull smoothly and return slowly; do not lean back or jerk the torso.
  4. Keep the neck relaxed: avoid shrugging and stop if the movement causes sharp discomfort.
