Carioca Drill

The Carioca drill is a lateral running and crossover drill commonly used in warm-ups and agility training. It develops coordination, foot speed, lateral movement control, and cardiovascular conditioning while moving sideways across an open space. It can support athletic movement preparation and change-of-direction skills.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Choose a clear, level space with enough room to travel sideways.
  2. Stand sideways to the direction of travel with knees slightly bent and your chest tall.
  3. Move sideways by crossing the trailing foot in front of the lead foot, then stepping the lead foot sideways.
  4. Cross the trailing foot behind the lead foot, then continue the front-and-behind crossover pattern as you travel.
  5. Keep your steps light and controlled, then repeat in the opposite direction.

Technique tips

  1. Start slowly enough to learn the crossing pattern before increasing pace.
  2. Keep your hips and knees softly bent rather than moving with locked legs.
  3. Look ahead instead of watching your feet.
  4. Use a clear surface and avoid crossing so far that you lose balance.
