Walking

Walking is a low-impact cardiovascular activity performed by moving at a steady pace on foot. It primarily develops aerobic fitness and uses the legs and glutes while also supporting daily activity, endurance, and general health goals. Pace and terrain can be adjusted to match fitness level.

Instructions

  1. Choose a safe route with an even surface, adequate lighting, and footwear that fits securely.
  2. Stand tall with your head up, gaze forward, shoulders relaxed, and abdomen gently braced.
  3. Walk with a natural stride, letting the heel contact first and rolling smoothly through the foot toward the toes.
  4. Swing your arms naturally close to your sides while keeping your hands and shoulders relaxed.
  5. Maintain a sustainable pace that matches your goal; increase speed gradually rather than suddenly.
  6. Finish gradually by slowing your pace before stopping, especially after a brisk walk.

Technique tips

  1. Use a conversational effort for an easy-to-moderate walk; for brisk walking, breathing should be faster but controlled.
  2. Avoid overstriding; keep steps comfortable and let your feet land beneath or close to your body.
  3. Build volume gradually by increasing time, distance, or pace in small increments.
  4. Pay attention to your surroundings, especially near traffic, uneven ground, or poor lighting.
