Running

Running is a continuous locomotor activity performed by moving at a running pace over a chosen route or surface. It primarily develops cardiovascular endurance while engaging the legs and glutes, and it can support general fitness, aerobic capacity, and endurance goals.

Instructions

  1. Warm up with a few minutes of easy walking or very light running, then begin on a safe, suitable surface.
  2. Stand tall with your head neutral, eyes forward, chest relaxed, and a slight forward lean from the ankles rather than the waist.
  3. Run with compact arm action, keeping elbows bent comfortably and allowing the arms to swing forward and back without crossing far over the body.
  4. Land softly with your foot under or close to your body, then push smoothly into the next stride; avoid reaching far forward with the foot.
  5. Breathe steadily and choose a pace you can control. Slow down or walk if your form deteriorates, and finish with an easy walk to cool down.

Technique tips

  1. Build gradually: increase distance, duration, or pace progressively rather than making large jumps.
  2. Keep strides natural: a relaxed, quick turnover is usually preferable to forcing long strides.
  3. Use appropriate footwear for your activity and surface, and check the route for hazards and traffic.
  4. Respond to pain: stop if you feel sharp or worsening pain rather than trying to run through it.
