Dumbbell Deficit Push-Up

The dumbbell deficit push-up is a body-weight pressing exercise performed with the hands gripping dumbbells on the floor. The raised handles allow the chest to travel lower than in a regular push-up, increasing the available range of motion. It primarily trains the chest, with substantial assistance from the triceps and front shoulders, and supports upper-body pushing strength and control.

Instructions

  1. Place two stable dumbbells on the floor slightly wider than shoulder width, with their handles parallel.
  2. Grip the handles and step or walk your feet back into a high plank with your body in a straight line.
  3. Brace your abdomen and lower your chest between the dumbbells by bending your elbows in a controlled motion.
  4. Descend only as far as your shoulders remain comfortable and the dumbbells stay stable.
  5. Press through the handles to return to the high-plank position without letting your hips sag or rise.

Technique tips

  1. Use hex dumbbells or another design that will not roll under your hands.
  2. Keep your wrists neutral by gripping the handles firmly rather than bending the wrists back.
  3. Let your elbows track at a comfortable angle instead of flaring them straight out to the sides.
  4. Reduce the depth or elevate your hands if you cannot control the bottom position.
