Side-Lying Hip Abduction

Side-Lying Hip Abduction is a bodyweight isolation exercise performed while lying on one side and lifting the top leg away from the midline. It primarily trains the gluteus medius and also involves the gluteus minimus, supporting hip strength and pelvic control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Lie on one side with your legs extended and stacked, keeping your head supported comfortably.
  2. Keep the lower leg relaxed and brace your torso so your pelvis stays still.
  3. Point the toes of the top leg forward and lift that leg upward and slightly back without rolling your hips.
  4. Pause briefly at a comfortable height, then lower the leg with control to the starting position.
  5. Complete the desired repetitions, then turn over and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the top hip stacked directly above the bottom hip rather than letting it roll backward.
  2. Use a smooth range of motion and avoid swinging the leg.
  3. Lift only as high as you can while keeping your pelvis stable.
  4. Exhale as you lift and inhale as you lower.
