Single-Leg Balance Reach

The single-leg balance reach is a bodyweight balance exercise performed by standing on one leg and reaching forward while hinging at the hips. It primarily trains the glutes and upper legs while challenging ankle stability, coordination, and core control. It can support balance, lower-body control, and movement quality for daily activity and sport.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, then shift your weight onto one foot. Keep a soft bend in the standing knee.
  2. Set your posture by bracing your abdomen gently and keeping your chest open. Let the other leg lift slightly behind you.
  3. Hinge at the hips and reach one or both hands forward toward a comfortable target. Keep your spine long and allow the back leg to extend behind you for balance.
  4. Control the bottom position without twisting your hips or collapsing the arch of the standing foot. Reach only as far as you can maintain steady control.
  5. Return to standing by pressing through the whole standing foot and squeezing the glute. Complete all repetitions, then repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a nearby support such as a wall or chair while learning, but avoid pulling on it.
  2. Keep the standing knee aligned over the middle toes; do not let it collapse inward.
  3. Move slowly and shorten the reach if your pelvis rotates, your foot loses contact, or you cannot balance.
