Alternating Leg Bridge

The alternating leg bridge is a glute bridge performed while lifting one foot at a time without letting the hips drop. It primarily trains the glutes and hamstrings while challenging core and pelvic stability. It supports hip strength, single-leg control, and improved lower-body stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat and hip-width apart, and arms resting by your sides.
  2. Lift into a bridge: Brace your abdomen, press through both heels, and raise your hips until your shoulders, hips, and knees form a straight line.
  3. Lift one foot: Keeping the pelvis level, slowly lift one foot a few inches from the floor while the knee remains bent.
  4. Alternate sides: Return that foot quietly to the floor, then lift the other foot. Continue alternating while maintaining the bridge position.
  5. Finish with control: Complete the planned repetitions, then lower your hips slowly. Stop if you cannot keep your hips level or feel pain.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the pelvis square: Imagine balancing a glass of water across your hips; do not let one side rotate or sag.
  2. Drive through the heel: Use the grounded heel and squeeze the glute on that side rather than pushing mainly through the toes.
  3. Avoid arching: Keep the ribs down and abdomen gently braced so the motion comes from hip extension, not the lower back.
  4. Reduce the challenge if needed: Lower the hips between repetitions or perform a regular glute bridge until you can alternate with stable form.
