Band Good Morning

The resistance band good morning is a hip-hinge exercise performed with a band anchored under the feet and positioned across the upper back. It primarily trains the glutes and hamstrings while teaching controlled hip extension and posterior-chain strength. It can support lower-body strength, hinge technique, and warm-up routines.

Instructions

  1. Set up the band: Stand with both feet about hip-width apart on the center of a resistance band. Bring the band up and place it securely across the upper back, not the neck.
  2. Find your position: Stand tall with soft knees, brace the abdomen, keep the chest open, and hold the band near the shoulders.
  3. Hinge at the hips: Push the hips backward while keeping the spine long and the shins nearly vertical. Let the torso tip forward under control.
  4. Lower within control: Descend only as far as you can maintain a neutral back and balanced pressure through the feet; feel tension in the glutes and hamstrings.
  5. Return to standing: Press the feet into the floor and drive the hips forward to stand tall. Exhale as you rise, then repeat without snapping the band or hyperextending the lower back.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize the hinge: Move the hips back rather than turning the exercise into a squat by bending the knees too much.
  2. Keep the band secure: Use a band with appropriate tension and ensure it is flat, centered, and stable across the upper back.
  3. Maintain spinal control: Keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis and stop the descent before the lower back rounds.
  4. Use smooth breathing: Inhale while lowering and exhale as you extend the hips to stand.
