Barbell Glute Bridge

The barbell glute bridge is a loaded hip-extension exercise performed from the floor with a barbell across the hips. It primarily trains the glutes, while the hamstrings and core help control the movement. It supports lower-body strength, hip-extension power, and glute muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Sit on the floor with your upper back near a stable surface if needed to roll the bar into position, then lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat about hip-width apart.
  2. Roll a loaded barbell carefully over your legs until it rests in the crease of your hips; use a pad if needed for comfort and hold the bar securely with both hands.
  3. Position your feet so that your shins are close to vertical at the top, then brace your abdomen and keep your ribs from flaring.
  4. Drive through your heels and squeeze your glutes to raise your hips until your torso and thighs form a straight line.
  5. Pause briefly at the top without overextending your lower back, then lower the bar under control until your hips return to the floor.
  6. Complete the set with smooth repetitions, then guide the bar safely away from your hips before standing up.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load until you can keep the bar stable and your pelvis level throughout every repetition.
  2. Keep pressure through the full foot, with emphasis on the heels; avoid lifting the toes or letting the knees collapse inward.
  3. Finish by squeezing the glutes, not by arching the lower back or driving the ribs upward.
  4. Control the lowering phase and stop if the bar shifts or causes sharp discomfort.
