Dumbbell Glute Bridge

The dumbbell glute bridge is a floor-based hip-extension exercise performed with a dumbbell resting across the hips. It primarily trains the glutes, with support from the hamstrings and abdominal muscles, and helps build lower-body strength and hip-extension control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit on the floor with knees bent, feet flat about hip-width apart, and place a dumbbell horizontally across the crease of your hips. Hold the dumbbell securely with both hands.
  2. Lie back: Lower your upper body to the floor and position your feet so that your shins are close to vertical at the top of the bridge.
  3. Brace: Gently tighten your abdominal muscles, keep your ribs down, and press through your whole feet.
  4. Lift: Drive through your heels and squeeze your glutes to raise your hips until your torso and thighs form a straight line. Keep the dumbbell stable and avoid arching your lower back.
  5. Lower with control: Pause briefly at the top, then lower your hips slowly without dropping the weight. Complete all repetitions with a controlled range of motion.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the load secure: Hold the dumbbell throughout the set; use a manageable load that you can position and control safely.
  2. Lead with the hips: Think about squeezing the glutes rather than pushing the ribs upward or overextending the lower back.
  3. Adjust foot placement: If you mostly feel your thighs, move your feet slightly farther away or closer until the glutes work strongly without discomfort.
  4. Breathe steadily: Exhale as you lift and inhale as you lower while keeping your trunk braced.
