Barbell Seated Alternating Press

The seated alternating barbell shoulder press is an overhead pressing exercise performed one arm at a time while seated. It primarily trains the deltoids, with the triceps assisting each press. It can support shoulder strength, pressing control, and balanced development between sides.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Sit upright on a sturdy bench with back support, feet flat on the floor, and a light barbell positioned safely for a one-handed grip.
  2. Start on one side: Hold the barbell at shoulder height with one hand, wrist straight and elbow slightly in front of or below the bar. Brace your abdomen and keep your chest tall.
  3. Press overhead: Exhale as you press the barbell upward until the arm is nearly straight overhead. Keep the movement controlled and avoid leaning or twisting your torso.
  4. Lower with control: Inhale and return the barbell slowly to shoulder height without dropping into the bottom position.
  5. Alternate sides: Safely transfer or reposition the barbell, then repeat on the other arm. Perform the same number of controlled repetitions per side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a conservative load: A barbell can be awkward to control with one hand; choose a load you can lift and reposition safely.
  2. Keep the wrist stacked: Align the barbell over the wrist and elbow instead of allowing the wrist to bend back.
  3. Do not compensate with the lower back: Keep your ribs down and back supported rather than arching to finish the press.
  4. Stop if control is lost: End the set if the barbell tilts, your torso shifts, or you cannot transfer it safely between sides.
