Bounding

Bounding is a plyometric running drill that uses powerful, exaggerated strides with a brief flight phase between steps. It primarily develops the quadriceps, glutes, calves, coordination, and running-specific power. It can support sprint mechanics, lower-body explosiveness, and athletic conditioning.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Warm up with easy jogging and dynamic leg movements, then choose a flat surface with clear footing.
  2. Start moving forward at a controlled pace with your torso tall, core braced, and eyes looking ahead.
  3. Drive one knee forward and upward while pushing forcefully through the opposite foot to travel forward and slightly upward.
  4. Land softly on the ball of the front foot with the knee tracking over the toes, then immediately drive the other leg through.
  5. Alternate sides in a rhythmic, exaggerated running pattern while keeping the contacts quick and controlled.
  6. Stop the set if landings become heavy or posture breaks down; walk back and recover before the next effort.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize quality over distance. Use a distance that lets every landing remain quiet and springy.
  2. Keep the movement forward-dominant; excessive vertical jumping can disrupt the running rhythm.
  3. Start with modest efforts and increase volume gradually to manage impact on the feet, calves, and knees.
