Cable Rope High-Pulley Overhead Triceps Extension

The cable rope high-pulley triceps extension is an isolation exercise performed with a rope attachment on a high cable pulley. It primarily trains the triceps through elbow extension, while the shoulders and core help maintain a stable position. It supports triceps strength, muscle development, and pressing performance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Attach a rope handle to the high pulley and choose a load you can control.
  2. Hold one end of the rope in each hand, turn to face away from the machine, and step forward into a staggered stance. Slightly bend the front knee, lean forward from the hips, and brace your abdomen while keeping your spine neutral.
  3. Raise your upper arms beside your head and bend your elbows, bringing the rope ends just above and behind your forehead. Keep your wrists straight and the cable taut.
  4. Keeping your upper arms and torso still, exhale and straighten your elbows to move the rope ends forward until your arms are nearly straight. Do not forcefully lock your elbows.
  5. Inhale and slowly bend your elbows to return to the starting position. Maintain the same stance and torso angle throughout each repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the elbows fixed: movement should come from elbow extension rather than swinging the shoulders or torso.
  2. Control the return: use a load that lets you lower the rope slowly without losing the cable tension.
  3. Use a comfortable range: do not force the elbows deeply bent or lock them aggressively at the bottom.
  4. Brace and breathe: keep the ribs down and exhale during the extension to avoid excessive lower-back arching.
