Cable Lateral Lunge

The cable lateral lunge is a side-to-side lower-body exercise performed while holding resistance from a cable machine. It primarily trains the glutes and quadriceps while also challenging the adductors, hamstrings, and core to control the lateral movement. It supports lower-body strength, hip stability, and coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley around waist height and attach a single handle. Choose a light load that allows controlled lateral movement.
  2. Stand side-on to the machine, feet about hip-width apart, and hold the handle with both hands close to your chest. Step far enough away to create light tension.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and take a controlled step sideways with the outside leg.
  4. Bend the knee and hip of the stepping leg, sitting the hips back while the other leg stays straighter. Keep the working knee tracking in line with the toes.
  5. Maintain a neutral spine and resist the cable pulling or rotating your torso toward the machine.
  6. Press through the foot of the bent leg to return to standing slowly. Complete the desired repetitions, then repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: The cable should challenge your balance without pulling you out of position.
  2. Keep the planted foot stable: Maintain contact through the heel and midfoot of the bent leg; do not let the knee collapse inward.
  3. Control the return: Avoid letting the cable pull you back quickly; return under control and keep your torso square.
  4. Breathe steadily: Inhale as you step out and exhale as you press back to standing.
