Cable Shoulder Press

The cable shoulder press is a pressing exercise performed with low cable handles, driving the hands overhead against constant resistance. It primarily trains the deltoids, with the triceps assisting the press and the trunk helping maintain a stable posture. It supports shoulder strength, pressing control, and upper-body muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set two cable pulleys to their lowest position and attach single handles. Select a light load that you can control smoothly.
  2. Stand centered between the pulleys in a stable staggered stance. Hold a handle in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing forward and elbows slightly in front of the body.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your ribs down, and maintain a neutral spine. Do not lean backward to start the press.
  4. Exhale as you press both handles upward until your arms are nearly straight overhead. Keep the handles moving in a comfortable path and avoid forcefully locking the elbows.
  5. Pause briefly with the shoulders controlled, then inhale and lower the handles slowly back to shoulder height.
  6. Repeat for the planned repetitions. Stop the set if you cannot keep your torso stable or feel sharp shoulder pain.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: cable resistance can pull the arms backward; reduce the weight if you need to lean or arch your lower back.
  2. Keep the neck relaxed and avoid shrugging the shoulders toward the ears as you press.
  3. Use a controlled lowering phase rather than letting the cable stack pull your arms down.
  4. Match the range to your comfort: press only as high as you can while maintaining a stable torso and comfortable shoulders.
