Machine Converging Shoulder Press

The machine converging shoulder press is a seated pressing exercise in which the handles move upward and inward along a guided path. It primarily trains the deltoids, with assistance from the triceps, and supports shoulder strength and upper-body pressing development. The machine provides stability while allowing focused, controlled resistance training.

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine so the seat places the handles around shoulder height and the back pad supports your torso.
  2. Sit tall with your back against the pad, feet planted firmly, and grip the handles with neutral wrists.
  3. Brace your abdomen and press the handles upward and inward smoothly without lifting your shoulders toward your ears.
  4. Stop just before your elbows lock, then lower the handles slowly until your elbows are comfortably bent and the handles return to shoulder level.
  5. Keep your back in contact with the pad throughout. Use a load that allows controlled repetitions without pain or jerking.

Technique tips

  1. Match the seat height to your shoulder level; handles that start too high or low can make the press uncomfortable.
  2. Keep your ribs down and avoid arching your lower back to move the load.
  3. Exhale while pressing and inhale during the controlled return.
  4. Do not let the weight stack slam at the bottom; maintain tension and a smooth tempo.
