Double Kettlebell Thruster

The double kettlebell thruster combines a front-racked squat with an overhead press using two kettlebells. It primarily trains the quadriceps and shoulders while also involving the glutes and triceps. This compound exercise develops lower- and upper-body strength, coordination, and whole-body work capacity.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Clean two kettlebells to the front-rack position, with the handles secure and the bells resting close to the forearms.
  2. Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart, brace the trunk, and keep the chest tall.
  3. Squat down under control, keeping the feet flat and the knees tracking in line with the toes.
  4. Drive through the feet to stand, using the upward leg drive to press both kettlebells overhead.
  5. Finish with the arms locked out and ribs controlled, then return the kettlebells to the rack before the next repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Use kettlebells that allow you to maintain a stable rack and a controlled overhead lockout.
  2. Keep the kettlebells close to the body during the squat rather than letting them pull the torso forward.
  3. Let the legs initiate the drive; avoid turning the movement into a strict press from the bottom.
  4. Lower the kettlebells smoothly to the rack and reset your balance before descending again.
